注重來曆語的譯法 注重目的語的譯法
word-for-word translation adaptation
英國翻譯學者Peter Newmark有感於自西元前一世紀以來，譯界對於應當採用直譯或意譯總是爭辯不休，並且計議時並未斟酌翻譯目標、讀者特征和文本類別，為了脫節這類限制，他在其代表作A Textbook of Translation (1988)中提出八種翻譯方式，列出一個V形表以下(Newmark, 1988:45)︰

此外，Newmark主張分歧的文本類型應利用不同的翻譯方式，他將語言的首要功能辨別為表述(expressive)、資訊(informative)和呼籲(vocative)三種功能，對於以資訊功能為主的文本如教科書、呈報等，和以呼籲功能為主的文本如佈告、宣導品等，利用溝通翻譯較為適合；而對於較重視語言情勢、以表述功能為主的文本如文學作品，則可採語義翻譯翻譯一般而言，溝通翻譯是以讀者的說話水平為準，語義翻譯的譯文則以作者的說話水平為依歸。
上表中愈靠左邊的翻譯方式愈方向直譯，而愈往右側就愈接近意譯，譯者可針對分歧的目的和讀者需求來選擇翻譯的方式翻譯此外，Newmark迥殊指出，只有語義翻譯和溝通翻譯能告竣翻譯的兩大主要目標：准確 (accuracy)和精簡 ( economy )。Newmark (1981: 39)對於溝通翻譯所下的界說為 「試圖對譯文讀者產生的結果，盡可能接近原文讀者所獲的結果」(Communicative translation attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.)，強調訊息的 「說服力」(force)大於訊息的內容(content)，是以譯文通常較為流暢簡明、相符目標語的閱讀習慣。此界說相當近似Nida所提的動態對等或功能對等。而與溝通翻譯相對的語義翻譯，Newmark則定義為「試圖在盡量契合第二語言的語義和句法佈局下，譯出原文切確的文境意義」(Semantic translation attempts to render, as closely as the semantic and syntactic structures of the second language allow翻譯社 the exact contextual meaning of the original.)，此種譯法強調忠於原文的情勢，譯文偏向較為複雜僵硬，接近Nida所言的形式對等。
